Fissure sealants are a protective plastic coating which is applied to the chewing surface of back teeth (premolars and molars). This helps prevent decay causing bacteria from reaching the tiny grooves in teeth.

Fissure sealants are a great preventive treatment as they protect the area most vulnerable to decay – the places a toothbrush cannot reach. The plastic material bonds to the grooves of teeth and acts as a barrier for plaque and tartar.

This is a simple and straightforward treatment which will usually only take a few minutes per tooth to complete. There is no pain and the tooth will feel exactly the same after treatment. During treatment the teeth are firstly cleaned and then prepared with a special solution and allowed to dry. The liquid sealant can then be applied to the tooth and set hard using a gentle light.

Fissure sealants are often applied as soon as the permanent teeth have come through. With routine check-ups and good dental hygiene, fissure sealants can last for many years and can be reapplied when necessary.
